Maintaining a Candidate’s Self Esteem
- Promotion of positive relationship with candidate,
- Gives candidate confidence to convey positive as well as negative experiences,
- Reduces possibility of faking to create a good impression,
- Lowers candidate anxiety.
This can be achieved by:
- Building rapport,
- Positive reinforcement through verbal and non-verbal behaviour, i.e. nodding, complimenting, open posture,
- Demonstration of empathy to minimise anxiety,
- Ensuring confidentiality, and making clear to whom the information relayed at interview will be available.
Situational-Based, Events-Based, or Behavioural-Based Interviews
The goal of this interview is to collect samples of the candidate’s behaviour in past work scenarios relevant to position applying for. The fundamental concept here is that past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour.
In a hiring situation, this implies that the best guess about what people would do in a job is what they have done previously.
Benefits of situation based interviews
- Eliminate misunderstanding about a candidate’s past experience,
- Prevents personal impression and bias from affecting evaluation and assessment,
- Reduces candidate faking.
Questions need to be designed that:
- Draw out specific examples of past behaviour so answers can be compared across applicants,
- Are open and neutral.
What to look for in responses
In this context, behaviour is an action or reaction in a specific situation with a known result.
It is not
what a candidate:
- Would like to do,
- Thinks should be done, or
- Should have done.
Reponses should contain the following information:
- Description of specific situation or event
- Key actions taken to cope with situation,
- Outcome achieved
